Cross-Border Dialogues
Under its academic program Sikkim University plans to initiate a series of dialogues
on various issues of academic and public interests with the immediate neighbouring
countries. These dialogues are initiated to understand our neighborhoods from local,
national and global perspectives. This dialogue is aimed at creating a reservoir
of knowledge and information base, enhance the level of cross-fertilization of ideas
and experiences and expand the institutional networking at various cross-border
levels. We plan to undertake such exercises with all the neighbouring countries
including Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, China, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Myanmar,
Thailand and other South East Asian countries.
The first such dialogue entitled “Economic Reforms and Development Dynamics: A Cross
Border Dialogue between India and Nepal” was held in April 2008 wherein the best
known experts from academia, diplomats, media, policy makers, civil society and
private sector gathered in Gangtok to initiate this dialogue.
The second such dialogue is taking place in December 2008 among India, Bhutan, Bangladesh,
Nepal, Vietnam, China, Thailand and Laos under the title of “Sub-regionalism Approach
to Regional Integration in South Asia : Prospects and Opportunities”.
