When was the Sikkim University founded ?

Sikkim University was founded in 2nd July 2007 by an Act of Parliament. Since its inception the University has brought the colleges in Sikkim under its purview and redesigned the undergraduate curriculum in the colleges and introduced the semester system. In 2008, Sikkim University began four Post-Graduate Departments and in 2009 it began four more Departments in the University. The University continues to grow and offers a bouquet containing a wide range of traditional and non-traditional courses.

The faculty members of the university, drawn from different parts of India, are dynamic and accessible to the students. The University offers practical education in the sense of the word. Classroom teaching is interactive, lively and unorthodox and there is emphasis on taking learning outside the classroom. The process of learning in the university includes not only lectures by the teachers but also Field Trips, Documentary Screenings, interaction with students of other universities under Student Exchange Programmes and seminars etc. The mission of the university is to offer students local, regional and global exposure. The strategic location of the University, at the junction of four International borders, makes the mission of the university a realistic one and the university’s initiatives [For example, International Collaborations etc.] contribute towards building this mission.

Sikkim University is the only national/central university (Established by an Act of Parliament, 2007) among a large private universities located in Sikkim.

Where is Sikkim University ?

Sikkim University is currently located in Gangtok, the capital of Sikkim. Sikkim University is situated at 6th Mile, which is 8 Kms before reaching Gangtok.

The proposed campus of Sikkim University is to be located in Yangang, South Sikkim, 56 kms from Gangtok.

How to Reach Gangtok ?

Gangtok is 113 Kms away from Siliguri (Darjeeling district, West Bengal), the nearest city well connected by road networks to various neighbouring states. It is about 120 Kms away from Bagdogra, the nearest Airport and the closest railhead is at New Jalpaiguri, which is 8 km away from Siliguri.

Regular bus/taxi services are available in plenty between Bagdogra/Siliguri and Gangtok. You may go to the office of Sikkim National Transport (SNT) on the Hill Cart Road, Siliguri

Who is the Vice-Chancellor of the Sikkim University ?

The present and founding Vice-Chancellor of the university is Prof. Mahendra P. Lama . Prof. Lama is from the School of International Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University and has taught for more than 20 years and is the author of many academic books, articles as well as various projects.

When does the Academic Session start ?

The Academic session of the university starts in the first week of July. However, the notification for application comes in the month of February and the entrance examinations are conducted in May. For further details see the admission link on the university website.
