Welcome to Sikkim

Sikkim is a landlocked Indian state located in the Eastern Himalayas. The thumb-shaped state borders, Nepal in the west, Tibet to the north and north east, and Bhutan in the south-east. The only internal boundary is with the state of West Bengal in the south.

Sikkim has four districts, East, West, South and North, with a total population of 5,402,493, making it the least populous state in India. Gangtok, in East Sikkim, is the capital and largest town of Sikkim.

The terrain throughout Sikkim is hilly, the elevation ranges from 280 metres (920 ft) to 8,585 metres (28,000 ft). The climate ranges from subtropical to high alpine. Sikkim experiences variable temperature with summer in the foothills and freezing winter on the high mountains. The climate of the state has been divided roughly into the tropical, temperate and alpine zones. For most of the period in a year, the climate is cold and humid as rainfall occurs in each month. The area experiences a heavy rainfall due to its proximity to the Bay of Bengal. The state receives an average annual rainfall of 500 cm. which is the highest in the Eastern Himalayas. The maximum temperature is recorded usually during the month of July & August and minimum during December & January.

Khangchendzonga, the world's third highest peak, located in the north-western part of the state on the boundary with Nepal, revered as the presiding deity of Sikkim, is visible from all parts of the state.

Sikkim is a popular tourist destination for its culture, scenic beauty and biodiversity.
